Statement from Tom Daschle, Andrew Card Jr., Kennedy Institute on January 6 events

As Democrats and Republicans who served at the highest levels of government, including the White House and the U.S. Senate, but more importantly as Americans, we’re appalled by yesterday’s violent and lawless attack carried out on our democracy at the United States Capitol. A cornerstone of our democracy is the willingness to accept the outcome of legitimate elections and to support the will of the people no matter the outcome.

We take heart that the United States Congress returned to its work last night, and that members of both parties have spoken up for America and its democratic traditions. Our ability to disagree but ultimately come together as a people is what defines who we are as a nation.

As board members of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, we share a special affinity for the Senate and its legacy, but more importantly for its future. That future relies on the ability of Senators who put the interests of America above all else and makes the Senate a place which inspires future generations to answer a call to service. The strength of our democracy has survived threats in the past and will survive recent events and we encourage all Americans to join together to both protect and celebrate our precious institutions.
